The City of Monticello will begin to accept applications to host fishing tournament on Lake Monticello starting September 1.
In May 2016, the City Council approved to lift the ban on fishing tournaments on its municipally owned lake. In 2012, at the request of the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission (AGFC), the City Council adopted a prohibition on fishing tournaments to help improve the lake’s habitat.
In early 2016, Mayor Zack Tucker asked the state’s wildlife regulatory agency to reconsider its recommendation to the City Council. After reviewing the aquaculture data collected by AGFC, the agency felt the lake has matured to a point to where it can successfully maintain a healthy population with a regular fishing tournament schedule.
Organizations/ clubs wishing to host a tournament on the lake, starting September 1, can apply for a permit to become authorized to hold their event on Lake Monticello.
The permit application requires a $50.00 application fee, proof of general liability insurance to held organization, and a $500.00 refundable deposit.
To help AGFC better monitor the aquaculture of the lake, the city has required tournaments to complete the state’s online Arkansas Tournament Information Program (ATIP) Weigh-In Summary Report within 30 days of completion of the tournament in order to receive a returned deposit.
