Baseball Drops Saturday With Reddies to Close Out Series

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – The University of Arkansas at Monticello baseball team traveled to Henderson State University for a Great American Conference series. The Weevils came out with a 9-4 victory over the Reddies on Friday in game one, followed by a 4-3 loss in game two and a 6-5 loss to conclude the series on Saturday.

Game 1, 9 Innings

Henderson State: 9, Arkansas-Monticello: 4
WP: Connor Irvine (6-5)
LP: Ryan Galvan (4-3)
SV: Matt Huey (1)

Scoring Recap:
The Weevils kicked off game one with an explosive first inning, scoring six total runs in the opening half of the game. Chaz Poppy brought home the first run on a single to center, followed by a two RBI single to left center from Parker DorranceReece Reading ripped a double to left center to score the fourth run, Jalyn Williams singled to score the fifth and DeShaun Cordova drove in the final run of the inning on a SAC fly to right field.

UAM scored three more runs in the fifth inning with Chaz Poppy driving in the first two on a double to right center, followed by Kirk Woolf scoring on a ground out.

The Reddies scored two runs in the sixth and one in both the seventh and eighth innings. but the effort was not enough to reclaim the lead from Arkansas-Monticello, resulting in a Boll Weevil win.

Game 2, 9 Innings

Henderson State: 4, Arkansas-Monticello: 3
WP: Henry Coppens (3-1)
LP: Mason Philley (5-4)
SV: None

Scoring Recap:
Arkansas-Monticello was once again the first team to score, putting up three runs in the sixth with the first being drove in on a Kirk Woolf double to left center. Parker Dorrance and Alex Austin both singled to bring home a run.

The Reddies responded with a solo home run in the bottom half of the inning.

Henderson State saw a two run home run in the seventh to tie the game 3-3.

A walk off single in the bottom of the ninth gave HSU the win in game two.

Game 3, 7 Innings

Henderson State: 6, Arkansas-Monticello: 5
WP: Mitchell Szczygiel (3-0)
LP: River Hunt (1-2)
SV: Cade Tucker (6)

Scoring Recap:
UAM scored first for the third time of the series, posting two runs in the first inning. Chaz poppy and Cade Cancilla both singled through the left side to bring home a run each.

A home run for HSU in the bottom of the inning made it a 2-1 ball game.

The Weevils scored three runs in the top of the fourth thanks to RBI singles from both Cade Thompson and Kirk Woolf.

The Reddies responded with two runs on a single and a SAC fly to shorten the UAM lead to 5-3.

Unfortunately the home team would score thee runs in the sixth to retake the lead from UAM, resulting in a 6-5 Loss for the Boll Weevils and a 2-1 series loss.

Pitching Performances
Game 1
– Connor Irvine started on the mound for UAM in game one, taking the win with 6.0 innings pitched with 2 runs allowed on 6 hits. He also struck out 7 Reddies.
– Matt Huey closed out the final 3.0 innings, earning the save with 2 runs allowed on 4 hits and 5 strikeouts.

Game 2
– Mason Philley got the start in game two, throwing 8.2 total innings with 4 runs allowed on 4 hits and 9 strikeouts.
– River Hunt closed out the game for UAM, allowing 1 run to end the game.

Game 3
– Derek Potts got th start in game three, totaling 4.0 innings with 3 runs allowed on 4 hits. He had 3 strikeouts in his outing.
– River Hunt closed out the final 2.0 innings as well, allowing 3 runs on 3 hits with 3 strikeouts.

Offensive Showcase
Game 1
– Chaz Poppy – 3-for-5 with 1 Double, 3 RBI and 1 Run Scored
– Cade Thompson – 3-for-4 with 2 Runs Scored and 2 Walks
– Reece Reading – 2-for-4 with 1 Double, 1 RBI, 1 Run Scored and 1 Walk

Game 2
– Parker Dorrance – 2-for-4 with 1 RBI
– Kirk Woolf – 1-for-4 with 1 Double, 1 RBI and 1 Run Scored

Game 3
– Cade Thompson – 2-for-3 with 2 Runs Scored, 1 RBI and 1 Walk
– Chase Cripps – 2-for-3 with 1 Double, 1 Run Scored and 1 Walk

The loss on the weekend pushes Arkansas-Monticello to a 22-15 overall, 13-11 GAC record for the 2023 season.

Arkansas-Monticello is back in action on Tuesday, April 11 when they travel to Cleveland, Mississippi to take on Delta State University for a midweek game. First pitch is set for 5:00 p.m.
