Blossoms Come Up Short on the Road to the Reddies

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – The University of Arkansas at Monticello Women’s Basketball team traveled to Arkadelphia, Arkansas to take on Great American Conference member Henderson State University on Saturday afternoon. The Blossoms came out of their sixteenth contest of the year with a 72-63 loss to the Reddies.

Returning sophomore Bailey Harris once again led the way for Arkansas-Monticello (7-10, 4-7 GAC) with a 14 point performance on the night. She shot for 6-14 on field goals, hitting one of three three pointers throughout the match and one free throw. She had both two defensive rebounds contributed on top of a steal in the match.

Joi Montgomery posted 11 points of her own in the match. She went 4-10 on field goals, 3-4 on shots from beyond-the-arc and 1-2 from the free throw line with two rebounds. She also had an assist and a steal.

Laia Balcells was the final Blossom to put double-digits on the board, scoring 10 points of her own. She also had two rebounds, two assists and two steals.

Henderson State (9-7, 6-4 GAC) was led by Ashley Farrar with a 30 point, 11 rebound performance.

Arkansas-Monticello was the first team on the board with a fast break layup from Alindsey Long. The Reddies responded shortly after with a layup of their own. UAM would score two more times to put them up 6-2 at the 7:12 mark. Their lead would stop there as Henderson State would go on a 21-7 run in the remainder of the quarter. UAM would finish out the quarter going 5-19 on field goals and 3-3 on free throws. The two teams would head into the second quarter with Henderson State on top 23-13.

The second quarter kicked off with the Reddies scoring first with a layup (25-13 Henderson). The Blossoms fought hard to come back in the second frame, out-scoring the home team 15 points to 12. Sadly this was not enough, as HSU would maintain a 7 point advantage at the half. UAM shot for 37.5% of their field goals throughout the quarter, while Henderson would shoot for 35.7% in their performance. The teams would head to the locker rooms with the Reddies ahead, 35-28.

The third quarter was a well fought one by the Blossoms, who shot 40% from the field and 80% from the free throw line. UAM would outscore Henderson 16-14 in the third ten minute period of the game. The Blossoms clawed their way back to withing five to end the frame 49-44 Reddies. HSU would go 5-15 on field goals, compared to Arkansas-Monticello’s 6-15.

The final quarter of the game was a shoot out and a close one for the Blossoms. At one point UAM would have the Reddies within three. However, some late scoring would eventually put Henderson State up by 12 with 1:53 left on the clock. Arkansas-Monticello would do what they could, but unfortunately could not reclaim the Reddie lead. HSU would out score UAM 23-19 in the quarter, with Henderson State coming out on top with a final score of 72-63.

Arkansas-Monticello committed 11 turnovers in the entirety of the match.
