
FAYETTE, Iowa – The University of Arkansas at Monticello Women’s Basketball team was in Fayette, Iowa to open up their 2022-23 season at the Central Region Challenge, hosted by Upper Iowa University. The Blossoms took on the Peacocks of Upper Iowa University and came out with a 74-59 loss to close out the tournament.
Newcomer Joi Montgomery led the way for Arkansas-Monticello (0-2) with 17 points, going 8-15 on shots in the two-point range. She also contributed a team leading nine rebounds in her 32 minutes played.
Sophomore Bailey Harris contributed 16 points of her own, going 6-14 on field goals, 1-4 on threes, and 3-3 on free throws with three rebounds.
Laia Balcells put up 10 points in the match-up. She went 4-4 on the evening for field goals and 2-2 on shots from the line, while also giving the Blossoms three rebounds.
Upper Iowa (2-0) was led by Lydia Haack with 28 points.
The first quarter proved to be completely dominated by the Blossoms as they scored the first points in the opening 10 minutes. UAM came out 8-18 for field goals and 1-3 on three pointers. The two teams would head into the second quarter with Monticello on top 18-13.
The second quarter was lowest scoring of the game, with both teams shooting a combined 29 points. The Blossoms were able to make 42% of their field goals throughout the second 10 minutes. The teams would finish the half and head to the locker rooms with Upper Iowa on top, 32-28.
The third quarter proved to go the Peacocks way as well as they would outscore the Blossoms, 23-17. UAM was able to put more shots in the air, going 7-15 on field goals and 3-4 on free throws.
The fourth quarter went very similar to the third as Upper Iowa would once again outscore UAM. The match would eventually come to an end with the opponent on top, 74-59. The Blossoms fall to a 0-2 record on the season.
Arkansas-Monticello committed 16 turnovers in the entirety of the match.

The Blossoms return to Monticello on Tuesday, November 15 for their home opener at Steelman Field House. UAM is set to take on Delta State University at 5:30 p.m.
