BOLL WEEVIL STAMPEDE RODEO SET FOR MARCH 28-30

The University of Arkansas at Monticello will host the 13thannual Boll Weevil Stampede Rodeo March 28-30. Student athletes from the Ozark region of the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association will compete at the Drew County Fairgrounds each evening beginning at 7 p.m. Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for UAM students with ID and for children ages 6-12. The event is free for children 5 and under. Competition events include bull riding, saddle bronc riding, bareback riding, steer wrestling, calf roping, team roping, barrel racing, goat tying, and breakaway roping.

Participants compete for prize money as well as championship points to qualify for the College National Finals Rodeo. The 2018-2019 UAM Rodeo Team currently has two nationally-ranked ropers, Slayton Taylor and Whitney DeSalvo. Taylor is ranked first among team roping headers in the region and third nationally. DeSalvo is ranked first team roping heeler in the region and third nationally. The UAM Women’s team is in fourth place in the Ozark region with a small point margin separating them from third place. The top three regional competitors in each event determine those headed to nationals, held in Casper, Wyoming in June. In addition to Taylor and DeSalvo, several other UAM competitors have high point accumulations and may break into the top three places in their respective events next week. Only three rodeos remain in regional competition this season. This year’s Boll Weevil Stampede is sponsored by C & L Electric, Chris Bryant State Farm, Commercial Bank and Trust, and Monticello Ambulance Service, Inc.
