Cancilla Walks it Off in the Eighth, Weevils Leave Weekend With Series Win Over Tech

MONTICELLO, Ark. – The University of Arkansas at Monticello baseball team once again hosted Arkansas Tech University at Weevils Field for game three of their conference series on Sunday afternoon. The Weevils came out with a 12-2 victory over the Wonder Boys to claim a series win on the weekend.

Scoring Recap:
Arkansas-Monticello got off to a hot start in game three, scoring four runs in the bottom of the first. Cade Cancilla drove in Cade Thompson for the first run of the game on a double to left center. Parker Dorrance drove in Chaz Poppy on a SAC fly to right, followed by Cancilla scoring on some heads up baseball during a steal. DeShaunCordova drove in Torrin Vaselenak for the final run of the inning.

UAM scored their fifth run of the game in the third when Jalyn Williams drove in Torrin Vaselenak on a roped RBI double to left center field.

Cade Cancilla drove in Cade Thompson for the second time of the game, hitting a single through the six-hole to score him from second.

Arkansas Tech scored their first run in the fifth on a ground ball to the shortstop.

Kyle Frame kicked off the bottom half of the inning with a 2 RBI double to shallow center field, followed by a Chaz Poppy single through the left side of the infield to bring home frame. Kirk Woolf brought home Cade Thompson with a SAC fly for the 10th Weevil run of the ballgame. 

ATU grabbed their second run of the game in the eighth on a bases loaded walk.

After a triple to left center, Kirk Woolf scored the eleventh run for UAM in the bottom of the Seventh. Cade Cancilla walked it off immediately after with a solo home run over the left center wall, resulting in a 12-2 run-rule win for the Weevils.

Pitching Performances
– Derek Potts started on the mound for the Weevils in game one, dealing 7.0 innings with 1 run allowed on 3 hits. He also struck out 3 batters in his appearance.
– Matt Huey took the mound in the eighth, throwing 1.0 inning with 1 run allowed on 1 hit. He had 2 strikeouts.

Offensive Showcase
– Cade Thompson – 3-for-4 with 1 Double, 3 Runs Scored, 1 Walk and 1 Stolen Base
– Cade Cancilla – 4-for-5 with 1 Walk Off Home Run, 1 Double, 3 RBI and 2 Runs Scored

** Thompson hit his 55th career double in game three. Putting him two shy of the Great American Conference record of 57 career doubles.

The win on the day pushes Arkansas-Monticello to a 20-13 overall, 11-8 GAC record for the 2023 season.

Arkansas-Monticello is back in action at Weevils Field on Tuesday, April 4 when they host Henderson State University for a non-conference midweek game. First pitch is set for 3:00 p.m.
