


MONTICELLO, Ark. – The University of Arkansas at Monticello Men’s Basketball team hosted Southern Arkansas University on Monday in their eleventh Great American Conference match-up of the 2022-23 season. The Boll Weevils played a tough game, but unfortunately fell short in the final minute to the Mule Riders 65-61.
Isaac Jackson once again led the way for Arkansas-Monticello (5-12, 1-10 GAC) with 22 total points in his Monday evening return to Steelman Field House. Jackson had a solid night shooting 9-18 from the field and 4-7 on free throws with four assists.
Mario Fantina, the Croatian native, had 18 points of his own on the evening, shooting 6-10 on field goals and a phenomenal 6-9 from three-point range! He also racked up 4 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 block and 1 steal to finish his night.
Ray Price would lead the team in rebounds with 7. He went 2-3 from the field goal range, 1-1 from three point arc, 1-2 from the free throw line, had 3 assists, and two steals to give him 6 points on the night.
Southern Arkansas University (13-4, 9-2 GAC) was led by LaTreavin Black with 12 points.
Southern Arkansas was the first to score in the opening 20 minutes thanks to layup twenty seconds in to put them up 2-0. SAU would then shoot a three to extend their lead to 5-0. Arkansas-Monticello would respond with 10 straight points to put them on top 10-5. This would include a another monstrous dunk from Timur Krupalija at the 13:34 mark. The rest of the half would be filled with poor shooting from both teams up until the final five seconds when a layup by Cole Anderson would give the Weevils a one point lead headed to half. UAM would shoot 9-28 on field goals and 4-15 from beyond the arc compared to the Muleriders’ 11-31 on field goals and 3-14 from beyond the arc. The teams would head to the locker room with Weevils up 26-25 at the half.
The Mule Riders would once again score first to open up the second half, hitting a three pointer 20 seconds in. This was followed by an SAU layup to give the Mule Riders a 30-26 lead. Josh Denton reacted with a layup before the two teams would exchange shots for the next 16 minutes. Southern Arkansas would hit a three to tie the game up for the Muleriders at 59 a-piece. Jackson would hit a quick jumper to give the Weevils the lead but it wouldn’t last long as Southern Arkansas would respond with one of their own, 61 even. UAM would try to hold out and score again, but an unwanted turnover would give the Muleriders a layup to increase the score to 63-61. The Boll Weevils fought hard the rest of the game but were unable to hold on as Southern Arkansas would take the win. The match would come to a close with SAU on top, 65-61.
Arkansas-Monticello committed 13 turnovers in the entirety of the match.

The Weevils head to Bethany, OK on Thursday, January 26 to take on Great American Conference foe Southern Nazarene University. The match will tip off at 7:30 p.m.
