Weevils Win Fourth Straight
The UAM men’s basketball erupted in the second half to roll past Ouachita Baptist 88-68 Saturday. With the win, the Weevils have now won four straight against Great American Conference competition.
MONTICELLO, Ark. – The University of Arkansas at Monticello men’s basketball team puts together a strong effort on both ends of the floor in the second half to take down Ouachita Baptist 88-68 Saturday at SteelmanField House. After a hot shooting first half from both teams, the Weevils slowed the Tigers attack by forcing turnovers and closing out at the three-point line.
UAM (11-3, 10-3 GAC) was first on the board in the opening half, but OBU (3-8, 3-7 GAC) was quick to respond as the teams battled back-and-forth throughout the first half. The Weevils struggled to slow down the attack of the Tigers in the paint and allowed OBU to take advantage of turnover for easy buckets shooting 63 percent in the opening 20 minutes.
Not to be outdone, UAM showed a strong shooting stroke from the field in the first half as well shooting 63.6 percent overall and knocking down five from downtown. The half saw seven lead changes and nine ties with the score being knotted at 38 with under two minutes to play. OBU scored the final three points before the break as the Weevils took a 42-39 deficit to the locker room.
UAM turned up the intensity on the defensive end in the second half while maintaining the sweet shooting touch on offense. The Weevils forced the Tigers into 12 turnovers after the break converting those in 14 points. A three-point bucket from Miles Daniels with 10:20remaining put all the momentum on UAM’s side as it sparked a 17-0 run by the Weevils to take control with a 74-58 lead. The Weevils were able to expand the lead up to 24 with 2:27 to play before closing out for an 88-68 victory over OBU.
Daniels led all scorers in the contest with 24 points including five makes from beyond the arc to go along with four steals.
Denzel McDuffey followed in double-digits with 19 points and eight rebounds. Kendal Frey poured in 14 points of his own while going 4-of-4 from downtown. Lemmie Howard also had a double-digit scoring effort finishing with 11.
DaJuan Jones dished out double-digit assists for the third time this season setting up his teammates 10 time in the contest.
UAM finished the game shooting an impressive 59.6 from the field and draining 11 threes.
The Weevils will be back in action Thursday, Feb. 18, against Arkansas Tech in Russellville, Ark. Tip off is set for 7:30 p.m.
