Weevils Come Up Short Against SAU

MONTICELLO, Ark. – After trailing at the half, the University of Arkansas at Monticello men’s basketball returned with a sense of urgency to take the lead but could not hold off Southern Arkansas down the stretch. The Weevils surrendered an 11-4 run to the Muleriders in the final two and a half minutes to ultimately fall 69-62 Monday night at Steelman Field House.
UAM (11-4, 10-4 GAC) and SAU (11-4, 10-4 GAC) traded buckets in the opening five minutes until the Muleriders went on an 11-4 run in the next five minutes to take a 19-12 lead with under 10 minutes to play. The Weevils would trail the remainder of the first while shooting just 36.7 percent from the field. Lemmie Howard led the scoring attack for UAM with eight points as the Weevils went to the break down 31-27.
The second half opened with a sense of urgency for UAM as the Weevils started with a 9-4 run to retake the lead 36-35 with 17:39 to play. UAM built its largest lead at nine points after an 11-1 run to go up 47-38.
SAU would battle back to knot the score up at 50 with just under eight minutes remaining. The two teams went back and forth in the final eight minutes of the contest with the score being tied four separate times before UAM allowed the Muleriders to close the game on an 11-4 run in the last two and a half minutes. The Weevils were unable to get a stop down the stretch as SAU hit its last four shots as UAM ultimately fell 69-62.
DaJuan Jones led the Weevils in scoring with 15 points to go along with six assists. Denzel McDuffey and Miles Daniels also tallied double-digit scoring efforts with 12 and 11 points, respectively.
McDuffey notched his third double-double of the season pulling down a season-high 15 rebounds while collecting four steals as well.

The Weevils will be back in action Thursday on the road against Ouachita Baptist. Tip off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
