FINAL: UAM Men’s Basketball v. Southern Arkansas

MONTICELLO, Ark. – An electrifying shooting effort in the first half provided the University of Arkansas at Monticello men’s basketball team the cushion it needed to take down Southern Arkansas Monday night at Steelman Field House. The Weevils shot nearly 70 percent from the field, including six three-pointers, in the first half to build a 28-point lead at the break and hold off the Muleriders for the 78-64 victory.

UAM surrendered the first bucket of the game to SAU 13 seconds into the contest, but immediately responded with a three-point basket by Kyler Haynes to take the lead and never look back. The Weevils attacked the paint early and often tallying 22 points in the painted area.

An opportunistic defense helped UAM continue to extend its lead throughout the first half as the Weevils capitalized on 11 turnovers by the Muleriders for 15 points. UAM shared the ball effectively as well picking up 14 assists on 20 made baskets in the first 20 minutes.

Miles Daniels continued his hot shooting stretch leading the Weevils with 15 points at the break, including hitting three from beyond the arc in the final six minutes of the half. UAM closed out the first half on a 22-6 run to stretch the lead to 49-21 before heading to the locker room.

SAU found its shooting stroke in the second half, but the Weevils never allowed their lead to fall below double digits. A key for UAM to hold off the surge from the Muleriders was turning just three offensive rebounds into a 9-1 scoring advantage in second chance points.

The Weevils took advantage of their trips to the charity stripe knocking down 82.4 percent of their free throws. UAM capped its scoring the same way it started with it’s eighth three-pointer of the contest to stretch the lead to 16 with 1:25 to play. The Weevils ultimately dribbled out the clock in the final 25 seconds to secure the 78-64 win.

Daniels led UAM in scoring with 25 points to go along with five rebounds and two assists. Kendal FreyLemmie Howard and Denzel McDuffey joined him in double digits each scoring 10 points.

The Weevils dished out 20 assists on 28 made shots in the contest with DaJuan Jones leading the way spreading around 13 assists.
