John Booker – Rice Rep Story

My name is John Booker.  I am a senior at Drew Central High School and currently reside as the 2020-2021 Drew Central FFA President.  I was recently honored to be chosen as an Arkansas Rice Rep 2020.  As an Arkansas Rice Rep, I serve as a student ambassador for the state of Arkansas and hope to promote the rice industry and the importance of agricultural education.  All farmers, including the rice farmers, work long days and hours to produce quality crops that are sent across the United States and throughout the world.  It is imperative that we recognize this tremendous crop and our dedicated farmers by honoring them as heroes in the farming world.  There are many hidden facts about rice and how it changes the world, specifically our own country and state.   Arkansas is one of the leading producers of rice and it’s one of the main aspects of the Arkansas economy.

I was honored to spend personal time touring Whitaker Farms in McGehee, AR where I saw firsthand how rice is grown. I was able to take loads of pictures and see how different types of rice is grown firsthand, and I had the opportunity to meet a couple of the incredibly hardworking rice farmers in the state. These hospitable farmers shared their immense knowledge of farming in a one on one setting. As a 2021 Rice Representative, I plan on using my platform to promote the importance of agriculture in our society and I hope that everyone takes some time to look into the importance of the rice industry within our state.
