According to the Monticello Police Chief, Carlos Garcia, the Senior Citizen Center contacted the police on July 17, 2023 reporting their van stolen. The van was found vandalized within hours of the same day. The Monticello Police Criminal Investigation Department was led to obtain a warrant for arrest on Steve L. Smith,54, of Monticello. Smith was arrested on October 4, 2023 and charged with Commercial Burglary and Theft of Property. The first appearance was on October 5,2023 with the circuit court judge. The judge set a bond of $25,000.00. Smith is currently being held at the Drew County Detention Center.
