On behalf of the Monticello Fire Department, Chief Chisom would like to clarify a couple of things that should help the public in the future. The Monticello Fire Department is a City of Monticello department and it operates under the rules and regulations of the city. We do not go door to door selling tickets for anything nor do we ask any other Fire department to do so. If anyone comes around claiming to be helping the Monticello Fire Department raise money for trucks, equipment, or anything else feel free to call 870-367-5433 to verify. The Monticello Fire Department has and does occasionally participate in on site donation programs such as raising money for the Mississippi Burn Center and Muscular Dystrophy Association. As a matter of fact we will be at WalMart Saturday, October 19, collecting money for MDA. When we take those donations every cent goes to the MDA. It’s part of their nationwide “Fill the Boot” program. Now, the Monticello Firefighters Association is a non-profit organization that is made up of members of the Monticello Fire Department. We are separate from the City and we operate under our own Bylaws and have elected officers that govern the association. We do not participate in any activities that creates a negative image towards the City of Monticello nor the Monticello Firefighters Association. We have held several fundraisers to raise money for community projects, most recently we created an endowed scholarship at UAM. We also have raised money to buy presents for underprivileged kids for Christmas, provide Thanksgiving dinner for the elderly and assist families that suffered loses from fires. Any time our Association has a fundraiser it will be conducted by local members and the money raised goes back into our community. So any time you are unsure of someone collecting money please call and verify before giving to them.
