According to Monticello Police Chief Jason Akers, an arrest was made in a series of car break ins and attempted break ins earlier this month.
Jacob Alexander Derry, 19, was approached by officers in the vicinity of the break ins and after a short foot pursuit, Derry was apprehended by MPD.
After further investigation by MPD detectives, more information was obtained and Derry was charged with
Breaking and Entering and theft of property. Detectives estimate that between 30-40 vehicles were tampered with in an effort to enter unlawfully and take contents.
Chief Akers wants to thank members of the community who heard of the incidents and provided video footage that will be used in the prosecution of this and other cases. Akers also pointed out that while it’s unfortunate we have to lock vehicles and secure valuables, the only incidents where thefts occurred were where vehicles were left unlocked and valuables easily accessible. Simply locking your car doors stops 99% of the vehicle burglaries. “Criminals just move on to easier targets, which are unlocked vehicles” said Akers.
