The Arkansas-Monticello baseball team took down East Central University twice on Saturday afternoon to claim a series sweep over the Tigers. The Weevils came out off the first game of the day with a 12-0 win, and finished the final game of the series with a 2-0 win over ECU.
Junior LHP Mason Philley did something today that most pitchers only dream of achieving. In Game 1 of the doubleheader between UAM and ECU, Philley threw a perfect game as the Boll Weevils took the game in seven innings from the Tigers. Throughout the match, not a single runner reached first and no batter earned a hit. He struck out 10 different batters in an absolutely dominant performance on the mound. The left-hander has an experience to be proud of as the Weevils come out of the weekend with a series sweep over East Central.
Game 1
The Monticello ball players were the first and only team to score, posting six runs in the first, three runs in the second, another run in the third, and their final two in the sixth.
Grant Shepherd received an RBI for the first run of the game when he walked in Chase Cripps. Hudson Hopkins also walked in Jordan Johnson. Jalyn Williams hit his first career home run with the Weevils, driving a grand slam over the deck in left field to give UAM a 6-0 lead on the Tigers.
Chase Cripps got the momentum moving in the second inning when he launched a solo home run of his own over the center field wall. Jordan Johnson scored the second run of the inning on a wild pitch, and Reece Reading scored the final run on a Hudson Hopkins single to center field.
BJ Lee went yard for his first home run as a Boll Weevil as well. Sending a seed of a line drive over the left field fence to give UAM a 10-0 lead over ECU.
The final two runs of the match were scored in the sixth inning as Jordan Johnson and Grant Shepherd both scored on singles from Hudson Hopkins and Nick Fakouri.
The Weevils would win the match 12-0.
Game 2
The second match was a slow match for both teams as there was only two runs scored between them.
UAM scored both of those runs in the second inning as Jalyn Williams drove in Hudson Hopkins on a single up the middle, and Chase Cripps brought home Nick Fakouri on a single to left field.
The Weevils would cruise through game 2, winning the match 2-0 over the Tigers.
