It is heartbreaking to share the news of the passing of Robert ‘R.C.’ Toney, a retired Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office (JCSO) deputy, who passed away Monday, March 9th.

Anytime you learn of the passing of a fellow public servant such as R.C. Toney, whether it’s a death in the line-of-duty or as a result of natural causes, it’s devastating nonetheless. There are no words adequate to express your condolences.

Toney served in Jefferson County for 12 years before his battle with cancer forced him to medically retire in 2019.

He began his career with JCSO as a jailer in 2007 and was soon promoted to a transport officer in 2008. As a transport officer, Toney served as a mentor to the youth he was tasked with transporting to different locations.

Toney’s co-workers held the kindest of sentiments about him, describing him as ‘kind-hearted’ and always willing to help anyone.

Toney dedicated a lot of his time to volunteer work, creating baskets and providing food donations during the Thanksgiving holiday. He also participated in a program that collected shoes and cleaned them for people in need overseas.

R.C. Toney is a recipient of the Columbus E. Holmes Memorial Award that will be awarded at the upcoming JCSO Awards Banquet. This award was created in honor of Columbus E. Holmes, who served nearly 41 years of dedicated law enforcement service, passing away shortly after retirement due to declining health.

We offer our heartfelt sympathies to R.C. Toney and his family, both blood and blue.

Sincerely,

Lafayette Woods, Jr.
