Our May “Business Spotlight” is the Country Village Oven Bakery owned and operated by Wesley Cooper. Wesley is married to Jana Cooper (owner of Rocky Road Cafe & Creamery) and they have 4 kids. Wesley was actually born in Missouri, but raised in Star City. The bakery opened in 1996 by his father and mother. He and his brother Truman took over the business in 2004 and ran the store until 2016 when Truman moved to Little Rock to open up his own bakery. Wesley said he was born in the bakery business and enjoys the work while seeing the reward of the final product. He enjoys a good family working environment and currently employs 18 full time and part time employees. The bakery sells many items including breakfast sandwiches, donuts, cakes, pies, jam and bread. Some of their best selling items include chocolate chip cookies, glazed donuts, and coconut, chocolate, and pecan pies. They also have some new items including iced coffee and a spicy chicken sandwich (Wesley asked that you call ahead or contact them via Facebook if you would like a sandwich). Their business has continued to grow over the years – they not only have a thriving retail business, but they also have an expanding wholesale business- supplying food to many restaurants in Southeast Arkansas.
Their success hasn’t come without some funny mishaps over the years – like the time a worker mistakenly put salt (instead of sugar) in the peanut butter cookies.. or the time Wesley lost his wedding ring in some batter.. or even the time both him and Truman burnt their eyelashes from opening the door of a faulty oven in front of a group of customers.
The interior of the store was updated 3 years ago and Wesley said they plan on staying here as long as they have customers to buy their food. He is very thankful for Star City and the surrounding area for supporting them over the years and especially recently with the outbreak of COVID-19 and the business restrictions that came with it.
If you haven’t had the chance to stop in, we HIGHLY recommend you making a trip – they are top-notch and make some of the best desserts and bread in Arkansas. We are lucky to have them in Star City and want to thank them for supporting the Star City Area Chamber of Commerce.
