Weevil Offense Leads to a Series WIN over the Savage Storm

The Arkansas-Monticello baseball team took down Southeastern Oklahoma State University twice on Saturday afternoon to claim a series win over the Storm. The Weevils came out off the first game of the day with a 12-7 win, and finished the final game of the series with a 9-2 win over SEOSU.

The Weevils took the lead early in game 1, holding on to that lead and tacking on run after run as the match continued. Game 2 proved to be another power showcase for UAM as they continued to show what the team is really made of.

Game 1
The Monticello ball players were the first team to score, posting 4 runs in the second and another in the top of the third.

Hudson Hopkins scored the first runs of the game when he crushed a ball over the left field for a three run home run. Grant Shepherd and Reece Reading would score on the blast. Chase Cripps hit a SAC fly to score Nick Fakouri for their final run of the second., and Fakouri would score Reading on a SAC fly in the third.

The Savage Storm scored three runs of their own in the bottom of the third, but UAM quickly answered with 6 more runs across the fifth,sixth, seventh, and eighth innings.

Jordan Johnson started off the fifth with a home run to left field. Jalyn Williams scored in the sixth thanks to a Chase Cripps single down the first base line, and both Cripps and Cade Thompson touched home on a Jordan Johnson double to right center. Hopkins would score on an Orlando Arevalo ground ball. Reading and Johnson were the finally Monticello runs of the match when they crossed the plate thanks to a Hopkins single and. fielding error.

Although SEOSU would score 7 runs in the match, it was no use. The Weevils would win the match 12-7. They had 17 hits on the board.

Game 2
The second match was a slow match for both teams as there was only four runs scored between them until the top of the eighth.

The Storm struck first, scoring a run in the first inning.

Jordan Johnson blasted his second home run of the day over the left field wall for a two run shot to take the lead.

Southeastern found themselves another run on the board in the fifth, but UAM followed it up as the game went into extra innings. In the top of the eighth, the Weevils scored 7 total runs. Jordan Johnson scored as Hudson Hopkins was walked. Reece Reading touched the plate when Jalyn Williams singled to center field. Grant Shepherd scored on a BJ Lee walk. Cade Thompson put up the final four runs for UAM when he hit a grand slam to right field.

The Weevils would cruise through game 2, winning the match 9-2 over the Storm.

Pitching Performances
Mason Philley started on the mound in Game 1, totaling 6.0 inning pitched with three runs allowed on four hits. He stuck out five batters and had seven walks.
Trent Bunting tallied 2.0 innings pitched with four runs allowed on one hit. He struck out two batters and had five walks.
Jack Barna closed out the last inning Game 1 for the Weevils, striking out one with no runs allowed and one hits.

Spencer Johnston started Game 2, dishing out a full game, 8.0 innings pitched for the Weevils. He struck out a total of six batters, while only allowing 2 runs on two walk and four hits.

Offensive Showcase
Cade Thompson – A home run on the day with four total RBIs.
Hudson Hopkins – A home run on the day with five total RBIs.
Jordan Johnson – Two home runs on the day with five total RBIs.

The two victories push Arkansas-Monticello to 9-13 on the season and gives the Weevils a chip on their shoulder as they prepare for their upcoming mid-week with Mississippi College.

Arkansas-Monticello is back at Weevils Field on Tuesday, Mar. 22 as they are set to host Mississippi College. The match is set to begin at 3:00 p.m.
