Weevils Close out 2022 with a Loss at Home to the Tigers

MONTICELLO, Ark. – The University of Arkansas at Monticello Men’s Basketball team hosted in-state, Great American Conference member Ouachita Baptist University at Steelman Field House on Saturday afternoon. The Weevils came out of their tenth contest of the year with a 61-56 loss against the Tigers.

Newcomer Edwin Louis posted 18 points on the board as he led the way for Arkansas-Monticello (5-5, 1-3 GAC). He went 7-11 on field goals throughout the match. He also hit 3 of 5 on shots from beyond-the-arc with three rebounds, four assists and a steal contributed on the game.

Returner Josh Denton was the second Weevil in double-digits, scoring 11 points of his own. He would go 3-7 on field goals, 2-4 on three pointers, and 3-3 on free throws. He also contributed four rebounds and two assists throughout the conference match-up.

Ouachita Baptist (4-4, 2-2 GAC) was led by Ma’Darius Hobson and Tylar Hanes with 14 points each.

The first half of the match began with a three from the Weevils courtesy of the leading scorer Edwin Louis to give UAM an early lead. The Tigers climbed their way back, even retaking the lead with six straight points after the score was tied four separate times throughout the opening eight minutes. As the half continued, Arkansas-Monticello would push back, even taking control of the match back for a brief moment with a 27-26 lead. The Tigers would score the last four points of the first 20 minutes, sending the two teams to the locker room leading, 30-27. UAM shot for 40% on field goals, hitting 10 out of 25 attempts, as well as 5-11 on three-point shots.

The second half opened with the Tigers scoring the opening points and continuing to extend their lead to a nine point deficit. Arkansas-Monticello cwould climb their way back to a 46-44 game as they tread Ouachita Baptist. The remainder of the half would prove to be equally matched between the two, unfortunately coming to an end with the visiting team on top, 61-56.

Arkansas-Monticello committed 16 turnovers in the entirety of the match.

The Weevils return to action on Thursday, January 5 as they take on Great American Conference member Southwestern Oklahoma State University on the first stop of their Oklahoma road trip! The game is set to tip off at 7:30 p.m.
