Weevils Drop Final Match of Central Region Challenge

KANSAS CITY, MO. – The University of Arkansas at Monticello Men’s Basketball team was in Kansas City, Missouri to open up their 2022-23 season at the Central Region Challenge, hosted by Pittsburg State. The Weevils took on the Huskies of St. Cloud State University and came out with a 92-60 loss on Saturday.

Returner Josh Denton led the way for Arkansas-Monticello (0-2) with 12 points, going 4-5 on field goals and 3-4 on shots from three-point range. He also contributed two rebounds in his 34 minutes played.

Both Edwin Louis and Timur Krupalija each contributed 11 points each. Louis went 2-8 on field goals, 1-3 on threes, and 6-6 on free throws with two rebounds. Krupalija was 5-10 on the afternoon for field goals and 1-3 on shots from the line while give the Weevils five defensive rebounds.

Mario Fantina and Cole Anderson each put up 10 points of their own in the match. Fantina went 4-10 on field goals and 2-7 on threes, while Anderson was 5-11 on two-point shots and gave UAM a team leading nine rebounds in the match.
 
St. Cloud (1-1) was led by Joe Mutimer and Matthew Willert with 21 and 14 points.

The first half of the match began with the Huskies putting the first points on the board and quickly taking a 12-2 lead over the Weevils. Arkansas-Monticello refused to let that stop their moment, climbing their way back to a 16-14 ball game thanks to a combined effort from multiple Weevils. Although UAM did regain the lead for a brief moment, the team from St. Cloud would take it back and hold it for the remainder of the half. UAM would go 35% on field goals, hitting 9 out of 26 attempts, as well was 5-9 on three-point shots. The Weevils were able to put up 30 points throughout the entirety, down 42-30 as the two teams would head into the locker room.

The second half was a back and forth fight between St. Cloud and Arkansas-Monticello. The Huskies took the first points, continuing to increase the lead they had on UAM. The half would once again got to the opponent, as the game would come to an end with the Huskies on top 92-60.

Arkansas-Monticello committed 13 turnovers in the entirety of the match.

The Weevils return to Monticello on Thursday, November 17 for their home opener at SteelmanField House. UAM is set to take on Ecclesia College at 7:30 p.m.
