Weevils Drop New Year Opener on the Road to the Bulldogs

WEATHERFORD, Okla. – The University of Arkansas at Monticello Men’s Basketball team traveled to Weatherford, Oklahoma on Thursday to take on out-of-state Great American Conference foe Southwestern Oklahoma State University in their fifth conference match-up of the 2022-23 season. The Weevils came out of the first stop in their Oklahoma trip with a 78-65 loss to the Bulldogs.

Returner Cole Anderson led the way for Arkansas-Monticello (5-6, 1-4 GAC). Anderson posted 17 points in the match, going 6-10 on field goals throughout the match. He also went 5-5 on free throws with a team leading six rebounds contributed on the day.

Timur Krupalija posted 12 points of his own for the Weevils against Southwestern Oklahoma, going 4-7 on field goals and 4-7 on shots from the line with five rebounds and an assist.

SWOSU (6-5,2-3 GAC) was led by Kamden Gipson and Jalen Johnson with 16 points each.

The first half of the match began with a SWOSU jump shot, followed by a three pointer to give the Bulldogs an early 5-0 lead over the Weevils. The Weevils would respond with a fight back, reclaiming the lead at 8-7. The match would swap advantages three more times before Southwestern Oklahoma would begin pulling out front for the remainder of the opening 20 minutes. The half would come to an end with the Weevils shooting for only 33% on field goals, hitting 10 out of 30 attempts, with a 3-13 three-point ratio. The Weevils were able to put up 30 points throughout the entirety, trailing 38-30 as the two teams would head into the locker room.

The second half opened with the Bulldogs scoring eight straight points and increasing their lead to a 16 point advantage. Arkansas-Monticello would eventually fall behind by a game-high of 22 points before climbing their way back to a 72-62 ball-game with three minutes left on the clock. SWOSU would hold on to the lead for the remainder of the match. The game would come out to a close with Southwestern Oklahoma on top 78-65.

Arkansas-Monticello committed 17 turnovers in the entirety of the match.

The Weevils return to the court on Saturday, January 7 when they travel to Alva, Oklahoma to take on Great American Conference foe Northwestern Oklahoma State University to close out their Oklahoma road trip. The match is set to begin at 3:00 p.m.
