CLINTON, Miss. – The Arkansas-Monticello baseball team opened up their 2023 campaign on Friday when they traveled to Clinton, Mississippi for the first game of a three-game series against Mississippi College. The Weevils came out of the first game of the year with a 7-1 victory.
Scoring
UAM was the first team on the board as Cade Cancilla and Cade Thompson both touched home in the fourth inning off a Clay Lockett single to left field; putting the Weevils up 2-0 on the Choctaws.
Joe Brouilette was walked, advancing all runners on base, and scoring Cancilla, in the sixth inning to give Monticello its third run of the ball game. The inning would come to a close with the Weevils on top, 3-0.
Cancilla stepped to the plate in the top of the ninth inning with the bases loaded and sent a grand slam over the left field wall, scoring Kirk Woolf, Cade Thompson, and Parker Dorrance on the blast. The Weevils would head into the bottom half of the inning with a 7-0 lead.
Mississippi College finally found some momentum in the ninth, scoring the first and only run of the game on a ground out to the shortstop.
The Choctaws were unable to take back the lead from the UAM as the game would conclude with a Weevil WIN, 4-2.
Pitching Performances
Derek Potts collected the win on the day, totaling 7.0 innings pitched with 0 runs allowed, 5 hits, 0 base by balls, and 4 strikeouts on the day.
Lane Ladner closed out the game, dishing out 2.0 innings pitched for the Weevils. He struck out a total of eight batters, while only allowing five hits.
Offensive Showcase
Cade Cancilla – 1-for-2 on the day with 3 BB, a gand slam, 4 RBI, 3 runs scored,
Clay Lockett – 1-for-5 on the day with 2 RBI.
Joe Brouilette – 1-for-2 on the day with 2 BB and an RBI.
The win on the day pushes Arkansas-Monticello to a 1-0 start to the 2023 season and gives the Weevils a chip on their shoulder as they close the series with a double-header tomorrow.
