
MAGNOLIA, Ark. – The University of Arkansas at Monticello Men’s Basketball team traveled to Magnolia, Arkansas to host Great American Conference member Northwestern Oklahoma State University on Friday afternoon, following the delay of Thursday’s scheduled match-up due to power outages. The Boll Weevils came out of their fourteenth GAC match-up of the 2022-23 season with an 80-76 win over the Rangers.
Isaac Jackson and Josh Denton led the way for Arkansas-Monticello (7-13, 3-11 GAC) with 22 points each their Friday evening performance. Jackson shot 9-13 field goals, was nearly perfect on three-pointers with three of four made, and hit 1-2 free throws. He also contributed a team-leading eight rebounds with a block, a steal and an assist. Denton went 7-16 on field goals for the day, hitting six total threes on top of going 2-2 on free throws. He also gave the Weevils seven rebounds and an assist.
Cole Anderson was the final Weevil to put double digits on the board, scoring 10 points of his own, respectfully. Anderson shot 3-4 on field goals and 4-4 from the free throw line. He posted three rebounds and an assist on the day.
Northwestern Oklahoma (9-9, 5-9 GAC) was led by Malik Parsons with an incredible 41 point performance.
The opening 20 minutes of the match would start with both Josh Denton and Cole Anderson scoring back-to-back layups to give UAM the early advantage. The Rangers would respond with a few shots of their own, but were unable to regain the lead from the Weevils for the first 10 minutes of the game. The Rangers would see that lead for a brief moment, before UAM would pull ahead for the remainder of the half. The first half would come to a close with Arkansas-Monticello dominating the last third, shooting for 45% on field goals compared to the Rangers 38% on the half. The teams would head to the locker room with Weevils on top 36-33.
The Weevils were the first to score in the second half as Anderson would find a layup in the paint. As the second 20 minutes continued, Arkansas-Monticello would extend their lead to a high of 11 points. Northwestern Oklahoma would claw their way back within four as the two teams battled it out. The match would come to a close with Arkansas-Monticello on top, 80-76.
Arkansas-Monticello committed only 9 turnovers in the entirety of the match.
